Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Associate Director, the Student Services Professional IB performs professional student service work. Assignments typically require the application of both knowledge and judgment in using the principles, techniques, standards, guides and professional skills characteristic of a particular student service program or activity. This generally requires analysis of individual student needs using established guidelines, regulations, and precedents.

This role requires use of sound independent judgment while dealing with moderately complex student service problems. It demands the utilization of effective interpersonal skills with both individuals and groups, to be flexible and versatile, to use tact and sensitivity and to apply effective analytical skills in assisting with the preparation of documentation, mandatory reporting and program assessment.

The purpose of this work is to assist students in making successful progress toward their degree objectives; to provide learning experiences which supplement those in the classroom; and to assist and encourage students to utilize effectively the knowledge, skills and abilities learned during their university careers.
Student Organizations & Leadership (SO&L) advocates for students and contributes to learning, development, and retention by providing opportunities for involvement, leadership, and empowerment through a wide variety of organizations and programs. These experiences nurture campus pride and student success to advance an inclusive and equitable community.
The Program Advisor for SO&L provides direct support to students participating in departmental leadership programming and student organizations. The Program Advisor plays a role in providing students with a high-quality intentional leadership development experience. The Program Advisor assists with various leadership programming such as Leadership Conferences, workshops, and Summer Bridge Academy, and assists with the coordination and implementation of programming activities of the Leadership Initiative. The Program Advisor provides support to Fraternity & Sorority Life through community activities, council/chapter assistance, and facilitation of Greek New Member Education. In addition, the Program Advisor contributes to the development and execution of intentional student involvement and engagement programs, activities and events and will also advise student-led clubs and organizations.

FLSA Non-Exempt - This position is covered by health benefits, and is non-exempt, (eligible for overtime compensation) according to the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge and Abilities:
Working knowledge of the methods and problems of organization and program management; research and interviewing techniques; principles of individual and group behavior; the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge of the organization, procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned; and the basic principles, practices and major trends in the Student Services field to which assigned.

Ability to rapidly acquire a working knowledge of the specific objectives of the campus Student Services program and its relationship to the total campus operation; interpret and apply program rules and regulations; gather and analyze data; reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations; present clear and concise information orally and in written reports; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations and other private and public agencies.

Experience:
Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of one year of experience in professional Student Services work at the entry trainee level. Equivalent amounts of graduate level job related education may be substituted for the required experience.

Education:
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job related field.

Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.

Required Qualifications

Experience
1. Higher Education student services experience (e.g., advising, admissions, student programming or development)
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
2. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment subject to frequent change
3. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to provide services to a diverse student population
4. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in a diverse environment
5. Proficiency using standard office software packages (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite)
6. Familiarity working with school-based record/data systems/software (e.g., PeopleSoft)
7. Ability to apply moderately complex rules, regulations and procedures

Preferred Qualifications

8. Experience facilitating leadership programs in a college environment.
9. Membership in a social Greek organization.
10. Experience advising student-led clubs and organizations in a college environment.
11. Experience working for a fraternity or sorority, post undergraduate graduation.
12. Experience working with OrgSync, Microsoft Access, and Common Management System.
