Job Summary

Under the direction of the Marketing Director, the Graphic Designer I creates designs for advertising campaigns in print and electronic collateral, and web based materials that advertise Hornet Athletics and the 21 athletic teams. The incumbent is responsible for working within the Athletic Department with the Marketing Office and Green Army student group, as well as Media Relations and the Development Office on enhancing communications with students, donors, prospective donors and the community in an effort to increase attendance and exposure. Projects include (but are not limited to) posters, schedule cards, brochures, electronic newsletters, social media posts, web page graphics, banners, billboards and transit bus displays. The Graphic Designer I is responsible for ensuring that all materials produced meet the brand guidelines of the Athletic Department and the University.

FLSA Non-Exempt - This position is covered by health benefits, and is non-exempt, (eligible for overtime compensation) according to the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Minimum Qualifications

Entry to the first level within this classification requires foundation knowledge in the principles and techniques of artistic and graphic design as well as demonstrated design and artistic skills. This knowledge and skill normally is obtained through a college degree in graphic design, fine arts, or a related field or through technical experience and/or relevant coursework. In addition, strong communication skills and the ability to use and maintain currency with applicable computer software packages and systems are essential to entering this classification.

Required Qualifications

1. Experience with graphic design related to sports.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
2. Foundational knowledge of graphic design for sports.
3. Demonstrated ability to prepare lay outs and pre-press production for various publications and artwork for department projects such as slide presentations, newsletters, signs, flyers, brochures, directories, maps, posters, billboards, logos, exhibits/displays and illustrations.
4. Proficiency in graphic design and layout software such as: Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Captivate, and Acrobat Pro.
5. General knowledge of systems, techniques and processes used in website design, photography, printmaking, content management systems (CMS) and other applicable media.
6. Working knowledge of PC and Mac operating systems, Microsoft Office, and HTML.
7. Basic knowledge of copyright laws, especially relating to creative properties.
8. Working knowledge of University and Athletics Department brand guidelines.
9. Thorough knowledge of English grammar, punctuation and spelling.
10. Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively in order to consult with internal and external contacts.
11. Excellent organizational and attention-to-detail skills with the ability to work on multiple projects concurrently and meet deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

12. Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, fine arts, or a related field.
13. Experience working at a college or university utilizing creative skills to create print, electronic media and web designs in order to visually communicate the goals and objectives of higher education.
14. Design experience in Athletics or sports background including both men’s and women’s sports; portfolio samples of sports related designs.
15. Knowledge of social media, social media sites, and their applications as sports marketing tools.
16. Knowledge of Sacramento State marketing policies and identity style.
17. Ability to demonstrate professional portfolio, if requested.
