Job Summary

As the Center’s chief administrator, the Executive Director is responsible for program administration, staff supervision, external funding and grant programs, outreach, fundraising, budget management, and compliance with all applicable rules and regulations. The Executive Director will lead the Center into a period of rapid expansion to operationalize the bold vision and strategic plan with creativity, innovation, and collaboration, garnering additional resources that enables it to be self-sustaining and offering more opportunities to a wider audience and future markets. The Executive Director will ensure it is well organized and managed as a knowledge enterprise of the university, one that is increasingly visible, accessible, and connected inside and outside Sac State, in the Capital region and beyond, bringing significant benefits to Californians.

FLSA MPP - This position is defined in the Management Personnel Plan (MPP) of the California State University. It is excluded from the collective bargaining process and is exempt from overtime provisions of FLSA. This position is covered by health benefits.

Department Information

The Dale and Katy Carlsen Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship will be established in a 10,000-square-foot space in the University Library and will include entrepreneurship education, services and programs for students and the community. It is meant to forge alliances between the campus community, and public and private organizations at the forefront of developing innovative leaders. Learn more about the Center at:

The Center will be part of and work with the Office of Academic Affairs, the largest administrative unit in the University, encompassing the seven Academic Colleges, the University Library, and the College of Continuing Education.

Minimum Qualifications
Required Qualifications

1. A Bachelor’s degree
2. A minimum of five years of experience in developing and/or growing and running new entrepreneurial ventures or businesses, and/ or five years of experience running entrepreneurial support organizations, e.g., Center for Entrepreneurship in an academic setting, business incubator, venture labs, maker space, accelerator, venture capital investor or other innovative enterprises
3. Significant experience in effective team building, working in teams across disciplines, and cultivating and maintaining external partnerships
4. Evidence of effective communication skills, both verbally and in writing, and the ability to represent the CIE regionally, nationally and internationally
5. Experience in program planning, implementation, and administration, including management of budgets and personnel
6. Experience in training, mentoring, supervising and evaluating staff

9. Demonstrated knowledge of the state capital region’s and/or the national entrepreneurial environment

12. Meaningful involvement with relevant professional, government, or industry associations and agencies
13. Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures
14. Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations including conflict resolution
15. Ability to focus on the mission, vision and the strategic plan and achieve the top goals as required

16. A Master’s degree
17. Experience working in a university environment
18. Experience in supporting teaching and scholarship/creative activities in the area of innovation and entrepreneurship
19. Experience with diverse college students, including mentoring students, speaking in a class, serving on a center’s advisory board, and/or judging student compensation
20. Demonstrated knowledge with crafting and bringing to market next-generation technology, product, service and business model innovations
21. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of academic organizations, missions and visions, goals, objectives, policies, procedures and key resources necessary in cultivating campus-wide educational platforms
22. Demonstrated ability and experience in grant seeking and external fundraising, with writing skills in grant proposals, reports, and case statements

Conflict of Interest

The duties of this position include participation in decisions that may have a material financial benefit to the incumbent. Therefore, the selected candidate will be required to file Conflict of Interest Form 700: Statement of Economic Interest when they first occupy the position, an on an annual basis, complete ethics training within 6 months of appointment, and attend this training every other year thereafter.
