Job Summary

Under the direction of the Dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, the Associate Dean for Research and Engagement is a key member of the college leadership team and is primarily responsible for the following areas: overseeing and strategic planning of external grant proposals to support college priorities, expanding college engagement and forming partnerships with the community, and directing the college’s external communication through printed matter, internet and social media. The Associate Dean serves as a College/University/Community Liaison and works with the Associate Dean of Student Success as needed. Other responsibilities may include assisting the Dean in the ARTP process, planning and facilities management; safety, and university relations. The Associate Dean also assists with strategic planning and implementation of initiatives related to the Mission and Vision of the College and the University. The Associate Dean helps ensure compliance with policies and procedures, researches issues, analyzes institutional data, prepares reports, makes recommendations for changes in policy or procedures, and handles confidential problems that arise in the college. The Associate Dean may serve in the Dean’s capacity in the absence of the Dean.

The College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics has approximately 194 faculty members and 3150 students. The College offers Bachelor’s degrees in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Geography, Geology, Physics and Mathematics and offers Master’s degrees in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Geology and Mathematics. The Dean’s office is supported by an additional Associate Dean focused on Student Success.

FLSA MPP - This position is defined in the Management Personnel Plan (MPP) of the California State University. It is excluded from the collective bargaining process and is exempt from overtime provisions of FLSA. This position is covered by health benefits.

Minimum Qualifications
Required Qualifications

Education and Experience
1. Ph.D. in a discipline represented in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics from an accredited institution.
2. Accomplishment in teaching, research, scholarship and service such that the successful candidate is eligible for an appointment at the rank of tenured Full Professor in a department within the College.
3. At least two years of academic administrative experience in a college or university setting as program director, department chair, or equivalent.
4. Experience in assembling, building and leading collaborative teams
5. Experience with budget management
6. Experience in communication and marketing of programs through print, internet and social media

7. Evidence of successful external and internal partnerships
8. Strong record of successful external funding applications; working knowledge of state and federal grant compliance procedures and grant administration
9. Excellent organizational, analytical and quantitative skills
10. Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
11. Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality when needed
12. Commitment to and experience with faculty governance
13. Commitment to diversity and issues of justice, equitable and inclusive education and ability to work effectively with a diverse student body and campus community

14. Experience working with federal agencies to generate large research, instrumentation and collaborative grant funding.
15. Experience with website design and social media communication.

The duties of this position include participation in decisions that may have a material financial benefit to the incumbent. Therefore, the selected candidate will be required to file Conflict of Interest Form 700: Statement of Economic Interest when they first occupy the position, an on an annual basis, complete ethics training within 6 months of appointment, and attend this training every other year thereafter.
