Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the President, the University Ombudsperson serves as a facilitator for students, staff, faculty, and members of the campus community to promote a positive campus climate and environment. The Ombudsperson serves as a campus resource for facilitating informal problem resolution through listening, providing information, making referrals to other campus resources, and identifying options and alternatives. The Ombudsperson provides a confidential, neutral, and informal process which facilitates fair and equitable resolutions to concerns and complaints for students, staff, faculty, and member of the campus community.

The incumbent is responsible for developing, coordinating, and promoting educational programs and information and resources relating to campus climate issues. Serves as an information and communication resource, recipient of feedback, advisor, informal mediator, and change agent. The incumbent is responsible for assessing the merit of requests and complaints; assists in the expeditious resolution of problems; and if necessary, redirects the individual to the appropriate body or officer of the University.

FLSA MPP - This position is defined in the Management Personnel Plan (MPP) of the California State University. It is excluded from the collective bargaining process and is exempt from overtime provisions of FLSA. This position is covered by health benefits.

Minimum Qualifications
Required Qualifications

1. Master’s degree from an accredited university and or college.
2. Five years of experience in facilitating/mediating the resolution of problems and conflicts among individuals within a large organization.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
3. Knowledge of mediation and conflict resolution methods.
4. Strong conflict resolution and problem solving skills.
5. Strong oral and written communication skills.
6. Ability to interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or groups, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences or various alternatives of action.
7. Ability to determine informational needs, collect and analyze information, and prepare reports.
8. Ability to develop, design, and present educational and informational programs and/or workshops which are appropriate to the position.
9. Demonstrated ability to research/analyze data and recommend policies or procedures.
10. Demonstrated ability to assist in solving problems, evaluating complex issues and dealing with sensitive concerns.
11. Ability to have positive and effective interaction with a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds and viewpoints and at all levels of management, faculty, staff, and students.
12. Ability to explain state, federal, CSU and Sacramento State policies and procedures.
13. Possess a high level of tact and sensitivity.
14. Ability to maintain neutrality, confidentiality and handle sensitive communications.

Preferred Qualifications

15. Advanced degree from an accredited university and/or college.
16. Certificate of training for Ombuds, Conflict Management, or similar training.
17. Experience in higher education institution environment.
18. Three years of experience working with students and advising on complex student-related matters.

The duties of this position include participation in decisions that may have a material financial benefit to the incumbent. Therefore, the selected candidate will be required to file Conflict of Interest Form 700: Statement of Economic Interest when they first occupy the position, an on an annual basis, complete ethics training within 6 months of appointment, and attend this training every other year thereafter.
