Department History
Hiring Department Summary

The History Department at Sacramento State prides itself both on its teaching and its scholarship, with several award-winning instructors and authors on its faculty. The department hosts the only PhD program in the humanities offered by the CSU system (the Public History PhD run jointly with UC Santa Barbara) and active MA programs in History and Public History. At the undergraduate level, a History/ Social Science precredential program and a developing concentration in Public History complement the History BA. Sacramento State has a diverse student population and was recently designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution. Through this hire, the department seeks to raise its profile both in terms of student engagement and scholarly activity, as well as strengthen its outreach to the local community.

Essential Duties

The expectation is that the successful candidate will receive an assignment as a 12-month faculty to serve as the Peter H. Shattuck Endowed Chair in Colonial American History, which seeks to bring distinction in teaching, research, and service to the Department of History. The endowed chair assignment will be a three-year term, renewable at the discretion of the dean. The endowed chair position provides a reduced teaching load (two courses per semester), a salary differential in addition to the regular instructional faculty salary and professional development funds. The major responsibilities of the chair position include organizing the annual Peter H. Shattuck lecture in colonial American history, an annual workshop for current and prospective teachers, and a triennial symposium.
In addition the position will be expected to:

1. Teach upper-division courses and graduate seminars in the transnational histories of enslaved peoples and in colonial US history, as well as develop other courses in the area of specialization
2. Engage in research and scholarly activity related to comparative slavery and colonial US history
3. Supervise undergraduate and graduate research
4. Advise history majors
5. Serve on department, college, and university committees,
6. Organize events to bridge research and teaching, and advance university engagement with the community

Required Qualifications

1. Ph.D. in History or a related discipline
2. Tenure at the Associate or Full Professor level
3. Record of outstanding teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels
4. Record of outstanding research in the fields of comparative slavery and US colonial history
5. Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse undergraduate and graduate student population
6. Demonstrated success in organizing programs for diverse constituencies, including undergraduate and graduate students, as well as community and professional organizations
