Hiring Department Summary

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics has 21 full-time faculty with a wide range of backgrounds and interests. The faculty are committed to teaching its undergraduate and Master’s level students. The Department offers approximately 40 undergraduate mathematics and statistics courses and 10 graduate courses. Classes are offered in the day, evening and a few on the weekend. Classes are generally small, with many opportunities for faculty-student contact.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers a variety of options to cater to the interests of its majors. The flexibility of the major allows students to pursue their BA degree with an emphasis in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, or teaching. Graduates have met with much success in finding employment in both the public and private sectors, particularly in high school teaching and local private industry. The Department also offers Minors in Mathematics and Statistics, and a MA degree for those who wish to pursue advanced study that can open opportunities to teach at the community college level, to pursue a PhD in mathematics, or to take jobs in industry or government. There are approximately 300 undergraduate math majors and 40 master’s students.

Essential Duties

Duties will include:
• supervision of student teachers in the Blended Program in Mathematics;
• teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in mathematics, including courses for future elementary teachers and secondary teachers of mathematics;
• engaging in a program of scholarship and disseminating the results of this scholarly activity;
• advising students;
• serving on department and university committees;
• engaging in community service.

Required Qualifications

• Education:
- A Ph.D. in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Applied Mathematics, or Statistics is required. All degree requirements must be completed by August 2018.

• Special Knowledge and Abilities:
- Record of outstanding teaching and a commitment to excellence in the classroom.
- Ability to teach in the department’s upper division Core Curriculum (Modern Algebra and Real Analysis)
- Ability to teach subjects included in departments program for future elementary teachers and secondary teachers of mathematics.
- Ability to supervise student teachers in the department’s Integrated Mathematics BA/Single Subject Credential Program (Blended Program in Mathematics).
- Established record of excellence in scholarship related to mathematics, mathematics pedagogy, or curriculum development.

Preferred Qualifications

- Possess prior teaching experience at the college level;
- Possess cross-cultural communications skills;
- Demonstrate the ability to mentor and support students from diverse backgrounds;
- Demonstrate knowledge of and commitment to diversity and issues of just, equitable, and inclusive education;
- Demonstrate the ability to provide pre-service teacher preparation in mathematics;
- Experience in K-12 curriculum development;
- Teaching experience in K-12 classrooms;
- Demonstrate commitment to contributing to the continual advancement of mathematics pedagogy within the department;
