Department Philosophy
Hiring Department Summary

The Philosophy Department, housed in the College of Arts and Letters, has one of the largest undergraduate philosophy programs in the California State University system. In addition to the general major, it offers major concentrations in Ethics, Politics, and Law and in Logic and Philosophy of Science. It serves the campus and its STEM disciplines through its general education offerings, and is the only department on campus to offer courses in every GE category.

Essential Duties

Duties include:
- Teaching four courses per semester in both lower and upper division undergraduate level Philosophy courses, primarily in the areas of specialization and competence;
- Contribute to curriculum and program development and assessment;
- Develop and teach courses that meet programmatic needs in the department and college;
- Contribute to meeting the department’s increasing demand for its courses serving the expanding STEM disciplines and professional/pre-professional programs on campus like health services and public policy.
- Contribute to the scholarly life of the discipline and have an active research program;
- Service and contribution to the Department, College, University, and regional community including participation in the systems of shared governance of the Department and the University;
- Engage in student advising and supervising undergraduate research;
- Contribute to the University’s Center for Practical and Professional Ethics;
- Work effectively with faculty, staff and students from diverse backgrounds.

Required Qualifications

- Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Philosophy. ABD candidates will be considered. If ABD, candidates will be required to complete the doctoral degree by August 2018.

Special Knowledge and Abilities:
- Area of Specialization: Ethics (in the areas of Health Sciences, Public Health Policy, or Medicine).
- One or more Additional Area of Competence: Science and Values, Values and Technology, Philosophy of Technology, Information Ethics, Philosophy and Public Policy.

- Experience teaching, or demonstrated willingness to develop, online/hybrid courses;
- Experience teaching diverse students,
- Experience teaching courses in Philosophy and general education.

Preferred Qualifications

- Potential to teach in more than one of the listed Areas of Competence,
- Potential to contribute the university’s initiatives in sustainability;
- Potential for online curriculum development and assessment,
- Potential to contribute in the department’s interest in digital humanities scholarship and teaching and experimental philosophy,
- Experience to support the university and department’s initiatives in student access, advisement, retention, and graduation.

- Writing Sample should include a sample of professional written work.
- Portfolio should consist of a list of courses taught or developed.
