Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Director of the Student-Athlete Resource Center (SARC), the Student Services Professional II performs moderately complex professional student service work. Assignments typically require the application of both knowledge and judgment in using the principles, techniques, standards, guides and professional skills characteristic of a particular student service program or activity. This generally requires: planning; both interviewing and counseling techniques; judgment to recommend solutions to problems and changes in program procedures; and/or acting as spokesperson within the area of expertise.

This role requires use of sound independent judgment while dealing with moderately complex student service problems. It demands the utilization of effective interpersonal skills with both individuals and groups, to be flexible and versatile, to use tact and sensitivity and to apply effective analytical skills in assisting with the preparation of documentation, mandatory reporting and program assessment.

The purpose of this work is to assist students in making successful progress toward their degree objectives; to provide learning experiences which supplement those in the classroom; and to assist and encourage students to utilize effectively the knowledge, skills and abilities learned during their university careers.

The Student-Athlete Resource Center (SARC) helps student-athletes participating in Sacramento State’s Division I Intercollegiate Athletics program to develop as independent and successful young adults with the skills to achieve their academic goals, to persist and graduate, and to meet NCAA eligibility requirements. The SARC offers academic advising, tutoring and mentoring, NCAA rules compliance and eligibility education, financial services support, and life skills programming for all student-athletes. Programs and services are provided in an assortment of ways, including; individual advising sessions, orientations, group and team meetings, coaches’ compliance and rules education sessions, first-year experience seminar/class presentations, and a variety of student development and academic workshops.

SARC staff help student-athletes to navigate a variety of campus academic policies and procedures, to understand NCAA rules compliance and eligibility requirements, and they provide services that place student welfare and the development of the whole student as a top priority. In addition, the SARC assists athletic coaches, staff, faculty, and administration in achieving overall integrity and success within our Division I athletics program.

The SSP II Student-Athlete Success Specialist is responsible for researching, reviewing, analyzing, interpreting and applying eligibility rules and regulations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and affiliated athletic conferences (Big Sky, WAC, etc.) when certifying student athletes to participate and represent Sacramento State in Division I intercollegiate athletic competition. This SSP II Student-Athlete Success Specialist may be assigned advising and programming duties for specific-sport student-athletes from traditionally high profile sports such as football and men’s basketball.
The incumbent is responsible for a variety of functions related to student-athlete support services such as academic and eligibility advising; student development programming; and admissions and recruitment evaluation and support. The incumbent works closely with various Student-Athlete Resource Center staff to verify accuracy of admissions and initial eligibility decisions and certifications; NCAA progress-towards-degree certification; General Education and graduation requirements; and overall application of appropriate University policies and procedures that support student-athlete development, success, retention, and graduation. Evaluations and decisions require an extremely high degree of comprehension and accuracy in application of legislation. Inconsistencies or discrepancies may result in penalty to, suspension of or negative impact on the reputation of Student Affairs, Intercollegiate Athletics and the overall Institution. The incumbent is expected to understand the importance and follow the requirements of meeting necessary NCAA and related athletic conferences’ rules compliance responsibilities in all areas related to the position.

FLSA Exempt - This position is covered by health benefits, and is exempt, (not eligible for overtime compensation) according to the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Department Information

The Student-Athlete Resource Center (SARC) provides Division I student-athletes with the support to develop as independent and successful young adults and the skills to achieve their academic goals, to persist towards graduation, and to meet all NCAA eligibility requirements. SARC offers admissions counseling, academic advising, tutoring and mentoring, NCAA rules compliance and eligibility education, financial services support, and life skills programming to all of Sacramento State’s Division I athletes. SARC’s services and programming are provided in an assortment of ways, including: individual advising, orientations, group and team meetings, coaches’ compliance and rules education workshops, freshmen seminar classes, and various student development and academic workshops.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge and Abilities:
Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of the program to which assigned; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management. General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.

Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data; advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; recognize multicultural, multisexed and multi aged value systems and work accordingly; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned. Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas Services Office.

Experience:
Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master’s degree in a job related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Education:
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.

7. Proficiency using standard office software packages (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite)
8. Familiarity working with school-based record/data systems/software (example: PeopleSoft)
9. Ability to understand, interpret and apply moderately complex rules, regulations and procedures

Preferred Qualifications

10. Master’s Degree in a related field from an accredited institution. Additional preference for applicants possessing a Master’s Degree in Counselor Education within any of the related-fields of counseling
11. One or more years of experience advising and/or mentoring student-athletes
12. Experience working with students considered to be academically “at risk”
13. Ability to understand, interpret and apply NCAA academic and/or admissions eligibility rules and bylaws.
14. One or more years of experience working with university athletics utilizing working knowledge of NCAA rules and compliance issues
15. Experience coordinating or administering services, programs or events related to student development and co-curricular programming
16. Demonstrated understanding of the special demands of the athletic environment to establish and maintain effective working relationships with student-athletes, coaches, faculty, staff and the surrounding community
