Job Summary

The Dean is part of the Provost’s academic leadership team and serves as the chief academic and administrative officer and spokesperson of the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies. The primary responsibilities of the Dean are to provide leadership and manage the programs and activities of the College as one of the academic units of the California State University, Sacramento campus. To this end, the Dean safeguards the quality of academic programs, ensures academic excellence and student success, facilitates and supports faculty development and productivity in teaching, scholarly and creative activities, and service to the institution and the community, in the context of shared governance. The Dean is responsible for oversight of the School of Public Affairs at the Sacramento Downtown Campus and the academic programs and centers that are located there. Representing the college, the Dean promotes diversity as well as interdisciplinary and innovative initiatives, coordinates and supports the development and evaluation of academic program offerings and student support systems. The Dean has primary responsibility for external funds development, gifts, grants, and contracts that support the breadth of activities of the College, and provides leadership in building strong relationships and partnerships with, and generating support in, the greater community for the benefit of the College. The Dean also oversees development of annual budget requests and administers the College’s budget. The Dean is responsible for personnel matters, including coordinating and supervising the administrative duties of department chairs, staff and program directors, and for making independent recommendations on all College appointment, retention, tenure, and promotion requests. The Dean supports the faculty in efforts to improve assessment of student learning outcomes for each degree program in the College. The Dean is responsible for academic program reviews and implementation of the University’s Academic and Strategic Plans in the College.

FLSA MPP - This position is defined in the Management Personnel Plan (MPP) of the California State University. It is excluded from the collective bargaining process and is exempt from overtime provisions of FLSA. This position is covered by health benefits.

Minimum Qualifications
Required Qualifications

1. Possession of an earned doctorate and eligibility for a senior faculty appointment within the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies;
2. Demonstrated commitment to shared faculty governance;
3. Successful teaching experience and record of research or scholarly activity in one or more of the disciplines in the College;
4. Evidence of successful personnel and fiscal resource management experience;
5. Experience with assessment of program learning outcomes;
6. Experience with and commitment to interdisciplinary programs and scholarship;
7. Five years of administrative experience in a university, including experience as a department chair or the equivalent level.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
8. Demonstrated ability to provide leadership to meet the goals/mission of the College and be a strong advocate for the programs in the College;
9. Recent and demonstrated commitment to working with a diverse faculty, staff and student population;
10. Strong written and oral communications skills;
11. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collegially and collaboratively;
12. Demonstrated ability and commitment to generate external funds;
13. Commitment to excellence in teaching and learning, as well as undergraduate and graduate education;
14. Knowledge and experience with accreditation processes including disciplinary accrediting agencies;
15. Evidence of community involvement and leadership as it relates to student recruitment and fundraising.

Preferred Qualifications

16. Understanding of and willingness to support the varied goals of the college faculty and academic programs;
17. Understanding of and willingness to support undergraduate and graduate research and student support programs;
18. Experience with and a commitment to a Liberal Arts education;
19. Familiarity with federal and state laws pertaining to the preservation or implementation of Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.
20. Experience managing a unionized workforce, subject to collective bargaining agreements;
21. Ability to build on existing strengths to create a vibrant vision for the future of the College;
22. Experience supporting Community Engagement, Service Learning, and/or Global Education;
23. Demonstrated understanding of the value of and support for the effective use of technology in all forms of instruction and research.
