The Department of Physics and Astronomy is a high-quality, baccalaureate program which has grown significantly over the past decade. With approximately 100 majors in our four degree programs and more in our minors and certificate programs, we are one of the largest baccalaureate physics programs in the country. With a healthy distribution of senior and junior faculty members (five tenure track hires in the past four years) we provide our students with experiences in a wide range of areas: high energy physics, astrophysics, low temperature physics, biophysics, condensed matter theory, computational physics, optics, AMO physics, and physics education research. The Department is committed to supporting faculty-student research through a number of unique programs made available by the generosity of donors to the Department. Our Department has a long history of faculty being recognized by our campus having won numerous awards for teaching, scholarly activity, and service. Recent graduates have pursued advanced studies at many institutions including UC Berkeley, Harvard, UC Davis, Arizona, Oregon, Oregon State, and Florida. Others have found careers in teaching or industry (including Intel, Google, Pixar Animation Studios, Apple, and the State of California). Across the board, our graduates are known for their hands-on and real-life problem solving skills.

Essential Duties

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is seeking an experimental physicist whose research complements that of the current faculty members in a high quality baccalaureate program that values student research. Duties for the successful applicant will:
– Teach introductory and upper-division physics lecture and laboratory courses.
– Serve as an academic advisor for physics majors.
– Involve undergraduate students in research projects.
– Develop departmental facilities and programs in physics.
– Pursue scholarly activity including seeking external funding.
– Perform service to the Institution (committee assignments, program development, etc.) as well as service to the Community.

Required Qualifications

- Ph.D. in physics or closely related field required. ABD applicants considered. If ABD, applicant must complete degree by August 2018.
– Graduate coursework and research experience in experimental physics.
– A strong commitment to teaching at the undergraduate level (i.e. major level, service, and general education) is required.
– Candidate must demonstrate that they can successfully develop an independent research program at Sacramento State.
– Candidate must demonstrate the ability to mentor undergraduate student research projects.
– Candidate must demonstrate a commitment and ability to work with a diverse student body.

Preferred Qualifications

- Prior teaching experience at the undergraduate level is highly desirable.
– Potential to contribute toward the development of new upper-division laboratory experiments.
– A desire to contribute to the development of upper-division general education coursework.
– Willingness to work with colleagues to assess and implement strategies to foster student success in introductory courses.
– Ability to utilize technology or other innovative strategies to improve access to high demand courses.
