Job Summary

Working closely with the Chief Risk Officer, the incumbent assists in developing and managing comprehensive risk management initiatives and insurance programs for the University. This position is responsible for ensuring risk management programs are clearly communicated and understood at the campus and auxiliary level, and for providing proactive measures, services and products to the University entities and auxiliaries, as well as coordinating with the CSU, State and Federal agencies.

FLSA MPP - This position is defined in the Management Personnel Plan (MPP) of the California State University. It is excluded from the collective bargaining process and is exempt from overtime provisions of FLSA. This position is covered by health benefits.

Department Information

Risk Management:
The department has responsibility for the following functions:

- Business Continuity Planning: Oversight and training for disaster contingency or continuity of operations planning
- Environmental Health & Safety: Compliance in the areas of occupational fire/life safety, HazMat, industrial hygiene, radiation safety, environmental management system, etc.
- Risk Management: Hazard and exposure mitigation, general safety, insurance, self-insurance, driving program, business risks and claims management
- Workers’ Compensation: Provision of medical and other benefits to employees with a work-related injury and/or illness
- Regulatory compliance training to University employees in areas relevant to its areas of responsibility.

Minimum Qualifications
Required Qualifications

Education
1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education. Degree(s) should be in Business Management, Risk Management/Safety/Industrial Hygiene, or other closely related discipline

Experience
2. Five years of professional level experience in a risk management discipline, e.g., risk management, occupational/industrial safety and environmental compliance, loss control, risk and insurance, business continuity planning, disaster response management, fire/life safety, etc. Working solely in the capacity of business continuity planning, disaster response management or fire/life safety may constitute not more than two years of the requirement.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
3. Ability to work with and present information to all levels of management and University faculty and staff.
4. Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office programs and the Internet.
5. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in written form, with a variety of internal and external audiences
6. Ability to work independently, to execute multiple large projects, and to evaluate and recommend solutions to the most complex business/systems recovery problems
7. Ability to climb ladders, negotiate rough surfaces and roof tops, climb stairs, work outside for extended periods of time in extreme weather, lift up to 40 pounds and carry equipment up to 20 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications

8. Master’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education, preferably in Business Administration, Risk Management or a closely related discipline.
9. Certification as an Associate in Risk Management (ARM), and/or a certification in Business Continuity Planning (any level) through a nationally and/or internationally recognized certification organization, and/or Certified Safety Professional (CSP), and/or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
10. Eight years professional level experience in a risk management discipline, such as risk management, occupational/industrial safety and environmental compliance, loss control, risk and insurance, business continuity planning, disaster response management, and/or fire/life safety, of which at least three years’ experience as a risk manager with full management responsibilities in a university setting. Working solely in the capacity of business continuity planning, disaster response management or fire/life safety may constitute not more than two years of the requirement.

The duties of this position include participation in decisions that may have a material financial benefit to the incumbent. Therefore, the selected candidate will be required to file Conflict of Interest Form 700: Statement of Economic Interest when they first occupy the position, an on an annual basis, complete ethics training within 6 months of appointment, and attend this training every other year thereafter.
