Job Summary

Primary responsibility of the Associate Vice President (AVP) for Academic Excellence is to assist the Provost and Vice Provost in providing leadership in promoting and safeguarding quality assurance and quality improvement policies and processes for all degree and non-degree programs of the University. Under the general direction of the Provost, the AVP will manage the university’s academic program review processes and schedules, as well as organize and manage university accreditation processes and procedures including serving as the Accreditation Liaison Officer (ALO) to the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). This position will oversee the Office of Academic Program Assessment, and will act as the liaison with College Deans and the Faculty Senate to monitor new academic program development and curricular updates.

FLSA MPP - This position is defined in the Management Personnel Plan (MPP) of the California State University. It is excluded from the collective bargaining process and is exempt from overtime provisions of FLSA. This position is covered by health benefits.

Academic Affairs is the largest administrative unit in the University, encompassing the seven Academic Colleges, the University Library, and the College of Continuing Education.

Our Program Centers include: the Office of Graduate Studies, Research Administration, the Community Engagement Center, the Center for Teaching and Learning, Academic Technology & Creative Services, International Programs & Global Engagement, and the Center for College Readiness. Most important, we ensure quality academic programs for all students and support well qualified faculty to provide excellent teaching and learning.

Minimum Qualifications
Required Qualifications

1. Doctorate or equivalent from an accredited university

2. Prior experience as a Dean, Associate Dean, Department Chair, or experience in academic administration (e.g. Dean, Associate Dean, Department Chair, etc.);
3. Experience with program review and assessment of student learning outcomes;
4. Experience with and commitment to interdisciplinary programs;
5. Experience with accreditation processes and procedures;
6. Experience interacting and collaborating with administrators, faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds;
7. Successful teaching experience and record of research or scholarly activity.

8. Strong leadership and interpersonal skills to work collegially and collaboratively to meet the academic goals/mission of the University;
9. Ability to be a strong advocate for programs in the University;
10. Experience with shared faculty governance;
11. Strong communication skills;
12. Demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, and academic programs.

Preferred Qualifications

13. Possession of an earned doctorate and eligibility for senior faculty appointment within one of the colleges in the University
14. Experience with and a commitment to a Liberal Arts education.
15. Experience in academic strategic planning

The duties of this position include participation in decisions that may have a material financial benefit to the incumbent. Therefore, the selected candidate will be required to file Conflict of Interest Form 700: Statement of Economic Interest when they first occupy the position, an on an annual basis, complete ethics training within 6 months of appointment, and attend this training every other year thereafter.
