Job Summary

The Dean for Undergraduate Studies reports directly to the Provost and is part of the Provost’s academic leadership team. The responsibilities of the Dean for Undergraduate Studies encompasses oversight for all of the programs, activities, centers, and functions within Undergraduate Studies; review of undergraduate degree programs and course proposals; oversight of general education and graduation requirements; coordination with Student Affairs on graduation and student advising including approval of course substitution forms and exceptions to required units; and the review and approval of special majors. The Dean is a liaison with the Chancellor’s Office on matters and reports related to undergraduate degree programs.

FLSA MPP - This position is defined in the Management Personnel Plan (MPP) of the California State University. It is excluded from the collective bargaining process and is exempt from overtime provisions of FLSA. This position is covered by health benefits.

Department Information

The Office of Undergraduate Studies is a key administrative unit within Academic Affairs and provides oversight of all undergraduate degree programs at the university and academic support services that enhance and strengthen the culture of excellence and innovation for our undergraduate students. The office provides supervision of the university’s general education program and supervision of a number of programs and initiatives that advance the student success goals of the University.

Required Qualifications

Education and Experience
1. Possession of an earned doctorate and eligibility for a tenured faculty appointment or retreat rights within one of the academic departments at the university.
2. Four (4) years of administrative experience in a university, including experience as a department chair, or equivalent level;
3. Successful teaching experience and record of research or scholarly activity in one or more of the academic disciplines of the university;
4. Experience with assessment of program learning outcomes (e.g. in general education programs);
5. Management or supervisory experience.

6. Ability to cultivate an environment of collaboration;
7. Evidence of a broad knowledge and understanding of current undergraduate education and issues facing diverse populations of students at all levels of higher education;
8. Demonstrated ability to be a strong advocate for undergraduate education;
9. Demonstrated commitment to shared governance and ability to work with a faculty senate;
10. Strong communications skills;
11. Excellent interpersonal skills;
12. Demonstrated commitment to projects aimed at increasing equity and nurturing a rich, vibrant campus community;
13. Understanding of and willingness to support undergraduate student support programs.
