Hiring Department Summary

The Department of Political Science (formerly Government Department) is dedicated to promoting political understanding and public engagement through innovative teaching, research, and community service in all areas of politics and political science. The department currently consists of nearly 40 faculty, with approximately equal numbers of tenure-line and adjunct faculty. With approximately 520 government majors, the department is deeply committed to quality undergraduate and graduate education, offering multiple degree programs including a concentration in international relations and a Master’s degree. The department also hosts a highly successful Model UN program, a lively peer-to-peer student mentoring program, and internship opportunities in the state capital. The department is housed in the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies, consisting of ten academic departments, four interdisciplinary academic programs, and several centers and institutes.

Essential Duties

Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses
Advising and mentoring students
Engaging in scholarly and professional activities
Providing service to the department, college, and campus
Providing service to the community

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. in Political Science or related field.
ABD candidates will be considered. If ABD, candidates will be required to complete the doctoral degree by January 2019.
Demonstrated commitment to working with a diverse student body and a diverse community.
Strong commitment to college teaching
Ability to teach a range of undergraduate and graduate courses in comparative politics, including introduction to comparative politics (GOVT 35 and 140)
Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in comparative politics specializing in identity politics, including but not restricted to ethnicity, nationalism, social movements, migration, or religion.
Potential for scholarly achievement; open to methodological approach

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of a diverse student body
While regional specialization is open, preference for candidates able to teach courses on the Middle East or Europe.
