Hiring Department Summary

The Department of Recreation, Parks & Tourism Administration in the College of Health and Human Services offers a BS and MS in Recreation Administration, with multiple program areas of focus for students. Approximately 430 majors are enrolled in the undergraduate program which is accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Parks, Recreation, Tourism and Related Professions (COAPRT). We are a growing faculty and are committed to innovative teaching, quality research, and providing valuable service to the community. We are seeking an enthusiastic individual to join us next year in a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank in the area of Hospitality and Tourism Management*.

*Note: In keeping with the standards required under COAPRT, all students are required to have 600 hours of pre-internship experience before completing a 400-hour internship in the industry. Our students, on average, are slightly older than the traditional undergraduate student and many have significant experience in the field. For that reason, they tend to respond very positively to faculty that also have significant industry experience.

Essential Duties

-Teaching undergraduate courses in hospitality and tourism
-Teaching classes in the undergraduate common core, graduate common core, or the General Education program
-Scholarly and Creative Activities (conducting research, publishing in academic journals or technical publications, presenting at regional, national, or international meetings, or serving as an editor or reviewer for such content)
-Service/Contributions to the Institution (serving on departmental, college and university committees)
-Service/Contributions to the Community (regional and academic communities)
-Student Advising (undergraduate and graduate students)
-Curriculum revision and development
-Internship supervision
-Supervision of undergraduate and graduate student research, including master’s projects and theses

Required Qualifications

- Ph.D. (or comparable terminal degree). At a minimum, an applicant must have at least one degree at the master’s or doctoral level in Hospitality, Tourism, or a closely related field. Individuals who are verified ABD at the time of application, will be considered. Evidence must be given that the degree will be finished within one year of appointment.

Teaching Experience:
- Demonstrate teaching experience related to the subject matter (hospitality and tourism management.

Professional Experience:
- Evidence of having the equivalent of at least two years full-time experience (or the equivalent in part-time employment) working in hospitality or a closely related field within the last ten years. (A candidate with less industry experience may be considered if the applicant can show evidence of extensive teaching, student advising, and course development in the area of hospitality and/or tourism management.)

Special Knowledge and Abilities:
- A strong academic background in at least one of hospitality management or tourism management is required.
-Demonstrate a strong willingness to work with diverse groups.
-Demonstrate a strong willingness to work with professional organizations in hospitality and tourism.

Preferred Qualifications

Teaching Experience:
- Demonstrate ability to teach one or more of the following areas: organizational behavior in hospitality, hospitality and tourism sales, introductory hospitality law, travel industry management, restaurant management, and strategic management in hospitality and tourism
- Demonstrate ability to teach introductory courses in tourism, including the social science aspects of tourism
- Past experience teaching in the lodging side of the hospitality industry
- Demonstrate ability to teach in the undergraduate common core (ex: management, research and evaluation, marketing, etc.)
- Teaching experience at both the undergraduate and graduate levels
-Show the ability to teach courses in General Education
- Experience advising students, supervising student research, and supervising students during internships

Professional Experience:
-Show significant professional experience beyond the minimum stated earlier, such that formal textbook knowledge can be supplemented by personal examples and case studies drawn from past experiences
-Have held relevant supervisory or managerial positions
-Have recent/current professional experience

Special Knowledge and Abilities:
-Demonstrate ability to work with relevant professional organizations and/or businesses
-Evidence of work with diverse groups
