Job Summary

Reporting to the Dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, the primary purpose of this position is the prevention and mitigation of injuries or illnesses from chemical, biological, and physical risk factors in the laboratory and field environment. The Safety Manager will provide technical oversight and guidance to NSM academic units that use, store and dispose of chemicals and biological material, advise on hazard assessment, training protocols, development and implementation of laboratory safety practices and policies and the development of standard operating procedures for teaching, research and stockroom laboratories. The Manager will work with EH&S to develop, monitor and maintain detailed records of a robust training program for faculty, staff and students. The manager will represent NSM in building safety and security issues, fire and police issues, EH&S matters, ADA accommodations, fieldwork and other campus and system-wide planning groups and committees.

The Manager will manage a comprehensive laboratory safety program in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, assisting faculty and staff with inventory, hazard assessment, laboratory and field safety policy development and development of standard operating procedures. This will include monitoring laboratory activities for compliance with health and safety regulations and requirements, the university’s Chemical Hygiene Plan and other institutional safety policies. The manager will assume on-site command of emergency situations and direct response, and function as the primary after hours emergency contact and college liaison with Police, Fire, EH&S and county and state agencies.

The Manager will directly supervise the Instructional Technicians and Equipment Technicians in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics who operate chemical and biological stockrooms and equipment support centers, and those who support laboratory instruction. This supervision will include hiring, training, and evaluating direct reports on an annual basis. The manager will work with the Department Chairs to address the laboratory preparation needs resulting from curriculum changes. The Manager will work with the Chairs and faculty to recommend curricular changes and research protocols to optimize safety in both teaching and research laboratories.

FLSA MPP - This position is defined in the Management Personnel Plan (MPP) of the California State University. It is excluded from the collective bargaining process and is exempt from overtime provisions of FLSA. This position is covered by health benefits.

The College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics has approximately 200 faculty members and 3150 students. The College offers Bachelor’s degrees in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Geography, Geology, Physics and Mathematics and offers Master’s degrees in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Geology and Mathematics.

Minimum Qualifications
Required Qualifications

1. Advanced degree in a science or related field.
2. Coursework or other training in occupational health and safety regulations, particularly related to chemical hazards.
3. Experience in laboratory safety regulations and best practices.
4. Experience in developing standard operating procedures. Training in emergency procedures.

5. The ability to wear personal protective equipment and experience selecting and maintaining PPE in a chemistry setting.
6. Knowledge of OSHA and associated regulations governing chemical right to know, laboratory safety, chemical safety process safety, and hazardous substance emergency response.
7. Excellent communication skills
8. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to maintain effective working relationships.
9. Demonstrated ability to provide leadership to diverse internal and external constituents

Conditions of Employment:

Preferred Qualifications

10. Ph.D. in a science field.
11. Certification in chemical hygiene.
12. Biosafety and field safety experience.
13. Experience in supervising technical staff in a university setting, procurement of lab supplies including chemicals.
14. Experience working as a safety oriented expert/resource in laboratories and stockrooms and in the field, particularly in a university setting.
15. Experience with developing and implementing Standard Operating Procedures for laboratory and field safety.
16. Experience conducting classroom safety training and developing safety training programs.
17. Experience with chemical hazard assessment and chemical incident investigations.

Valid California Driver’s License and maintenance of safe driving record required.
