Hiring Department Summary

The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences is housed in the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies, consisting of 10 academic departments, four independent and interdisciplinary academic programs, and several centers and institutes. The College is a cohesive unit academically and administratively, with a commitment to the academic success of all of our students without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, age, gender, gender identity/expression, sexual orientation, genetic information, medical condition, marital status, veteran status, or disability.
The department, with approximately 750 majors, is committed to a quality undergraduate program, collaborative projects with campus and community partners, and innovative instructional technologies. The department offers a BS in Family and Consumer Sciences with concentrations in Family Studies, Fashion Merchandising and Design, and Nutrition and Food. The department also offers a Pre-credential Single Subject Matter Program in Home Economics and participates in the Family Life Education certificate program approved by NCFR.

Essential Duties

- Teach undergraduate courses in family studies and supervise service-learning, practica and internships. Courses may include a combination of the following: The Family and Social Issues, The Child in the Family, Family Communication, Issues in Parenting, Adolescent Development, Adulthood and Aging, Family Life Education, Family Resource Management, Family Finance, Family Support Services (a service-learning course).
- Depending on experience and education, the assignment could include other related courses, existing or to be developed, particularly in the areas of family law, public policy, and diversity and global families.
- Develop a focused and productive scholarship area.
- Provide service to the department, college, university and community.
- Work closely with community partners.
- Recruit, mentor, and advise students with diverse backgrounds.
- Work as a cooperative member in the function of the department including course development, curriculum development, program assessment, and program review.

Required Qualifications

- Doctorate from an accredited university in Family Studies, Family Life Education, Family Policy, Global Families, Human Development, or closely related field is required. ABD candidates will be considered. If ABD, candidates will be required to complete the doctoral degree by January 2019.
- Demonstrated ability to teach college-level courses to a diverse student population.
- Proven track-record or demonstrated potential as a researcher conducting scholarly and/or applied research.
- Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community and to integrate diversity issues into the curriculum.

Preferred Qualifications

- College-level teaching experience in family law, family policy, global families, family studies, human development, or a closely related field.
- Professional experiences related to family law, public policy, family counseling, family life education, family support services, and/or family advocacy.
- Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE)
- Experience, interest and/or expertise in working with and for families as they interface with other systems. This may include various diverse populations: immigrant families, resource (foster) families, LGBTQ families, families in poverty, multi-national families, or other under-served populations.
- Active participation in professional organizations relevant to this position.
- Experience and ability using information technology in the teaching and learning process.
- Evidence of multidisciplinary and/or collaborative research.
- Demonstrated potential in obtaining external research funding.
- Recent publications focused on family law/public policy, family studies/human development in recognized peer reviewed journals.
- Experience in teaching online courses
- Ability to develop undergraduate research projects/lead undergraduate teams
- Ability to teach large classes
