The English department of California State University, Sacramento, is a community of teachers, scholars, writers, and support staff whose primary mission is to promote learning in composition, creative writing, English education, linguistics, literature, and the teaching of English as a second language. The department seeks to help students acquire knowledge, develop skills, and realize their own intellectual and creative goals.

At the undergraduate and graduate levels, the English Department presents a broad and balanced curriculum designed to develop the reading and writing skills, the interpretative abilities, and the cultural awareness of its students by maintaining and enhancing a tradition of strong teaching, solid scholarship, and vigorous support of creative literary activity.

Essential Duties

Faculty members are expected to:
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to college-level teaching excellence serving a diverse student body,
- Maintain an active research agenda,
- Work well with fellow faculty in various disciplines to shape the direction of the Department and University through active participation in committee work and faculty self-governance,
- Participate in student advising, and
- Make contributions to the broader community.

Course assignments may include:
- Undergraduate writing courses,
- Upper-division writing courses in the major, and
- Graduate seminars in the specialty area (Rhetoric and Composition)

Normal teaching load is four courses per semester. Reassigned time may be available for coordination of some areas of our BA, MA, and GE writing programs.

Required Qualifications

- Ph.D. in Composition/Rhetoric or related field. ABD will be considered. If ABD, applicant must complete degree requirments by August 2018
- Emphasis in technical and professional writing and ability to develop curriculum in this area,
- Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence at the college level,
- Demonstrated record of success working in a writing center and expertise in writing center pedagogy,
- Active scholarly agenda,
- Demonstrated record of success working with linguistically and culturally diverse students, and
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse communities of faculty and staff.

Preferred Qualifications

- Expertise in program administration and faculty development.
- Specific expertise in one or more of the following: web design, information design, social media, grant/proposal writing, usability/UX, and/or composition studies.
