Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Assistant Director, Housing Facilities and Grounds, the Custodial and Grounds Supervisor coordinates and oversees the daily activities of the Housing Custodial Services and Housing Grounds Maintenance units, providing leadership and oversight for all grounds and landscape maintenance, tree management, and custodial services.

The incumbent is responsible for personnel management including: supervision of custodians, lead custodians, grounds workers, and gardening specialists; scheduling and establishing priorities and goals; reviewing and inspecting work; performance assessment; mentoring and motivating staff, ensuring excellent customer service; providing staff with required and recommended training; and administering corrective actions and progressive discipline as needed. The incumbent will indirectly supervise up to twelve student assistants through a lead custodian during summer conferences.

The incumbent is also responsible for operations management including: implementing and monitoring appropriate policies and procedures; assuring quality standards are implemented; making recommendations for equipment purchases; participating in strategic planning for the Housing facilities; and ensuring appropriate safety policies, procedures and practices are consistently followed.

In addition, the Housing Custodial and Grounds Supervisor will assist the Assistant Director, Housing Facilities and Grounds, with administrative tasks associated with housing facilities management.

FLSA MPP - This position is defined in the Management Personnel Plan (MPP) of the California State University. It is excluded from the collective bargaining process and is exempt from overtime provisions of FLSA. This position is covered by health benefits.

Minimum Qualifications
Required Qualifications

1. Experience with custodial operations and/or equipment.
2. Supervisory experience including training, mentoring and/or evaluating staff.
3. Experience developing and implementing work schedules.
4. Experience developing and implementing procedures (e.g. quality control inspections).
5. Experience with planning, maintaining, and purchasing inventory.

6. Working knowledge of facilities and/or grounds maintenance operations.
7. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of workplace safety requirements and protocols (e.g. Injury and Illness Prevention Program).
8. Excellent communication skills.
9. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with both internal and external contacts in a diverse environment.
10. Computer skills with proficiency using standard office software packages (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite) and the ability to use maintenance management software.
11. Ability to understand and interpret the complexities of collective bargaining contracts in relation to the duties of this position.

Preferred Qualifications

13. Four (4) years of custodial supervising experience.
14. Grounds and landscape management experience.
15. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in a related field.
16. Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment necessary for landscape maintenance, including pest management, irrigation management, and arboriculture.
17. Experience working in a facilities environment and/or in a large school or university setting.
