Hiring Department Summary

The Department of Civil Engineering is one of five departments in the College of Engineering and Computer Science. The Department has 14 full-time faculty members who serve almost 800 undergraduate majors and 100 graduate students. The Department offers Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and Master of Science (M.S.) degree programs in civil engineering.

Essential Duties

-Effectively teach courses at undergraduate and graduate levels.
-Develop and engage in scholarly activities, including research and externally-funded projects.
-Advise students, develop curriculum, and other instructionally-related duties.
-Develop and supervise Master’s student research.
-Work cooperatively with a diverse student population as well as faculty colleagues on department, college and University-wide committees.
-Provide service to the institution and community.

Teaching responsibilities will include transportation engineering courses and other supporting courses in the B.S. and M.S. Civil Engineering degree programs.

Required Qualifications

-A doctorate in civil engineering with a background in transportation engineering. ABD candidates will be considered. If ABD, candidates will be required to complete the doctorate by August 2018.
-Strong background and research interests in one or more of the following areas: Transportation planning, transportation infrastructure and facilities design, traffic operations and ITS systems
-A commitment to quality teaching and scholarship.
-Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups.
-Effective oral and written communication skills and must be able to relate theory to practice.
-Professional registration as a Civil Engineer in California or the ability to become registered within four (4) years of appointment.
-Applicant must have passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam by the appointment date.
-Ability to develop and maintain a robust and up-to-date undergraduate transportation engineering curriculum.

Preferred Qualifications

-Ability to demonstrate specialization in transportation engineering that complement the strengths of the Civil Engineering Department.
-University-level teaching experience in civil engineering
-Transportation engineering experience in industry
-Bachelors and MS degree in civil engineering
-Ability to develop an applied research program, incorporating graduate and undergraduate student projects
-Ability to teach a variety of other undergraduate courses in civil engineering, such as surveying, computer aided design, computer applications, and statistics
